Clear the chimney of bird nests, etc.

Make sure the flue damper opens and closes, as well as locks in either position.

Verify the chimney will draw up the fire and smoke properly.

If it has been quite a while, have your chimney cleaned by a professional!

Fire can spread into studs behind the wall if there are open mortar joints. Make sure there aren’t any open mortar joints and have them repaired right away.
